Fiction to film and disappointing covers: Book blogger hop

New? Follow by email, RSS, Facebook, or Twitter.

Feature Friday, hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read, asks a weekly book related question. This week: What is the worst book you read that had the best cover?

Answer: First, I’ll start with a book I loved: The Flight of Gemma Hardy – liked the book, liked the cover. Then, I found this book titled ” The Girl Who Would Speak for the Dead” by Paul Elwork with a cover I liked, but the book was a disappointment (it was just…flat). The catch? They are almost the exact same cover. Do publishers think people don’t notice?

Same girl, same dress, same rock in the middle of the water…a slightly different angle and tint to the photograph does not make it an fresh, new cover.

For the second question of the week, from Jen at Crazy-For-Books, is: What book are you dying to see turned into a movie or television series?

Answer: I have three: Outlander series (by Diana Gabaldon), Prey series (by John Sandford), and All Souls Trilogy (by Deborah Harkness). The catch for this one, I would only want to see them if they could be done well, if they couldn’t, then they should be left alone.

What about you? Ever found two books with strikingly similar covers? A great cover that hid a terrible book? Finally, what can’t you wait to see in film format?

All covers taken from goodreads.com.

Are you excited that Outlander has been optioned for a TV Show? I’m hoping for something a la Game of Thrones on HBO – I think that is the only way it could work

I am, but I’m also a little nervous. I really want it to be done well (like Game of Thrones), I wish HBO was doing it (although I think they’ve ruined True Blood). Casting and script are going to be SO important.

I think a lot of it is going to depend on the director and Ron Moore is apparently a huge DG fan…so fingers crossed

Oh wow!! I get totally turned off of books that look way too similar. It makes me what to avoid both of them, simply because someone didn’t do enough research into cover art!

Love the blog! And ps… you have my dream job!!

Thanks! I don’t think anyone has ever described my job as “dream job” before – except me of course! Most people think it’s probably quite boring :)

That’s a great find lol! A lot of covers use stock art. Sometimes on goodreads we try to find covers using the same models just for fun. There’s a lot.

That is too funny about the two covers!
I almost chose Outlander for my book to film choice but I just don’t know if they could do Jamie justice. I have him pictured just perfectly in my head and I’d hate to see him not match up in a movie. lol

Me too! Casting and script with have to be just perfect, I don’t even know if it’s possible. But Game of Thrones has amazed me, so I am hopeful. I don’t think there is a “Jamie” in this world, but Keri Russell is who I’ve pictured as Claire.
