From Wild to All the Bird, Singing: Six Degrees of Separation

I like the idea of everyone or everything being separated by six degrees or less (although Kevin Bacon is what I think of when I hear the phrase…), and though it’s been a while since I joined in this meme created by Annabel Smith and Emma Chapman, I’m happy to be back with Wild by Cheryl Strayed.

This time around I managed to get from west coast hiking memoir to eerie literary fiction is six easy steps. From Wilco to cover art to classics, see how I went from Wild to All the Birds, Singing.

Wild Six Degrees

Step One: Whereas Cheryl finds a man in a Wilco t-shirt attractive, Black Moon is quite possibly named after a Wilco song.

Step Two: Moving from Black Moon’s perfectly adequate black and white cover to The Supernatural Enhancements gorgeously designed black and white cover.

Step Three: In the interest of keeping it simple, moving from one haunted house to another in This House is Haunted  and Jane Eyre.

Step Four: Not one, but two orphaned women who take a job of governess in a house marred by tragedy.

Step Five: Because people just cannot leave the classics alone. You cannot best Jane Eyre, but The Flight of Gemma Hardy gave an admirable effort.

Step Six: Where as Gemma finds herself on the remote Orkney Islands, Jake finds herself on a remote British Island in All the Birds, Singing. They’re practically literary neighbors.

Want to join? It’s fun, I promise. Here are the rules:

The cover is quite possibly the best thing about the book.

Haha, I didn’t mean it quite that badly. I liked the book (it was okay), but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the cover.

Aaaah I love the Wilco connection. That is a bit of obscurity I can appreciate. Well done, Rory!

Thank you! The more obscure the better, right?

What a neat concept! And now I’m off to find some Wilco to listen to, because it has been far too long since I’ve done that. Thanks for the reminder.

I just found out they are playing in Denver this summer and I really want to go (as much for the venue as for the band – Red Rocks Amphitheater).

Great job! I love the books you chose in this one!

I was getting a bit worried that you had abandoned 6 degrees of separation. This chain, is, as always, perfection. Especially the first link. And black and white covers. So much love.
