Heartbreak Hotel: A Tale of Book Buying Gone Wrong, Missed Opportunity, and the Intersection of Good Design and Good Literature.

File this immediately under first world problems.

I’m a book person, but not a book person, if you know what I mean. To elaborate, I’m basically trying to say I like to read, but I’m not overly picky about how. I’ll read on my phone, my kindle, or a physical copy. But… You could sense a but coming, right? I have absolutely fallen in love with Mr. Boddington’s Penguin Classics. It’s also a shame that they are no longer available*. It breaks my literary heart.

These beautiful books fall exactly in the intersection of a venn diagram mapping practical and pretty (which is, admittedly, exactly where I want to live my life).

Mr Boddingtons Penguin Classics.

Anthropologie is currently selling these four Jane Austen novels clad with covers designed by graphic artist Leanne Shapton in her signature painterly patterns. It’s a weak balm on my wounded soul. Particularly the Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility designs…

*I do own the Jane Eyre, of course. But the missed opportunity to own the (Ironically cheerful?) gorgeous Wuthering Heights HURTS.

Leanne Shapton as in ‘Swimming Studies’ Leanne Shapton? I LOVED that book (and still think about it regularly).

The very same! Talk about multi-talented…

Those books are beautiful! I didn’t realize that Anthropologie had them, and that cover art is so fitting for the classics. Wuthering Heights is one of my favorite classics, and my copy was damaged in a flood. Think I need an excuse to replace it with one of these beauties? Wouldn’t that be nice? 😉

I love those covers! I would have to have them facing out on a shelf.

Might it possible to look for the Wuthering Heights on ebay or at Alibris? Sorry, don’t mean to feed the addiction, but it seems if they’re not making them anymore you ought to be able to own them all. At least, that’s how I’d rationalize it!
